Georgia stabbings: Attorney appointed for woman accused of killing family

She was adamant that she didn’t want an attorney. But the woman accused of stabbing to death her husband and four children in their Gwinnett County home was appointed one anyway, court records show.

Attorney Robert Greenwald is representing Isabel Martinez, accused of killing her family inside a Loganville mobile home early Thursday. Martinez, 33, was charged with five counts of malice murder, five counts of murder and six charges of aggravated assault.

In a bizarre first court appearance Friday, Martinez said she did not want an attorney.

“I don’t need an attorney,” Martinez said through an interpreter. “My attorney is the people that we are fighting for…It does not matter what color you are because God loves us all.”

Greenwald did not immediately respond to messages left Monday.

Judge Michael Thorpe disagreed, telling Martinez she was entitled to an attorney. Thorpe warned Martinez to stop her behavior in the courtroom, which included smiling and flashing two thumbs up for the television cameras. She remained Monday in the Gwinnett jail, where she was being held without bond.

Immigration officials said Friday that Martinez illegally entered the U.S. from Mexico. But because it was her first encounter with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), it was unknown how long she has been the country, according to Bryan Cox, a spokesman for the agency. Martinez told police her husband was also in the U.S. illegally, Cox said.

Killed in the attack were Martin Romero, 33, and four siblings, including 2-year-old Axel, 4-year-old Dillan, 7-year-old Dacota and 10-year-old Isabela Martinez. Nine-year-old Diana Romero was also stabbed and flown by helicopter to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, where she underwent emergency surgery. She is expected to survive.

Unseasonable Winter Weather Takes A Bite Out Of Georgia’s Peach Crop

Despite a bad growing season, there were peaches for sale recently at a small stand at the Mulberry Farmer’s Market in Macon, Ga. The fruit caught the eye of Linda Marlow, visiting from the West Coast.

"We’re from California so we want Georgia peaches," Marlow said with a laugh.

California, by the way, produces more peaches than other state in the country. It isn’t like this is a novelty for Marlow.

"Well yeah, but we expect they are going to be better here," Marlow said.

For a lot of people up and down the East Coast, Georgia is synonymous with peaches. Think about it; when have you ever heard someone wax poetic about a California peach?

Turns out, though, Georgia peaches, and Southern peaches in general, are having a really tough year.

Mark Sanchez is the CEO of Lane Packing in Fort Valley, Ga. It’s one of the big growers in the four county area smack in the middle of Georgia where peaches come from. His office by the loading dock is in fact in Peach County. He says climate is the secret to Georgia’s peach dominance. He says California can’t touch Georgia’s weather.

"In Georgia we have the cool nights, lot of rainfall, very hot summers," Sanchez said.

That makes a juicy peach. Hot in the summer here? You bet. It’s those cool nights that were missing last winter and that’s a problem. Sanchez said before peaches bloom in the spring, they need long, uninterrupted stretches of cold in the winter.

"Our desired level is about 850 to 1,000 hours under 45 degrees," Sanchez said. That’s like two and a half months of cold nights. "This past winter we had just barely under 500."

That’s about one month of cold. Add a two-day March freeze and peach blossoms from here to North Carolina bit the dust. Georgia lost 85 percent of its crop. So is Georgia still the climate sweet spot for peaches?

"Certainly the climate is changing. For whatever reason, we won’t get into that," Sanchez said. In fact, the last couple of years have been too warm, he said. "But two years don’t make a trend," he added.

Climate data kept by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, or NOAA, go back much further than that. NOAA statistics put Georgia’s average winter temperature at 45 degrees Fahrenheit in 1895. The most recent average, from 2015, puts that at 47 degrees.

Still, even given the terrible season, Sanchez said there are plenty of peaches for Southern markets. Just don’t look for them outside the South.

"If you’re in Boston in mid to late July looking for Georgia peaches, they’ll be hard to find," Sanchez said.

Georgia’s peaches will be picked by early July. They usually last until August. Jon Clement, an agricultural extension educator with the University of Massachusetts Amherst said that may not be that big a deal.

"We got a moderate to good peach crop right now going. Which is good for us," Clement said of the Massachusetts peach crop. Clement said that if cold is good for peaches, the problem in Massachusetts is letting the trees get too much of a good thing.

"But it only got to barely below zero this year. So the winter was not a problem," Clement said.

He said that’s been the trend for growers there for over a decade. Clement said that means plenty of local fruit for New Englanders. Georgia’s peach crop, however, will stay in Georgia.

Back at the farmer’s market, Linda Marlow’s niece Shannon Perches imagined life in Georgia without local peaches.

"That wouldn’t sit well at all. I mean we’re in Georgia. We should be eating Georgia peaches,’ Perches said.

That’s something she can look forward to for a few more weeks.

Stockbridge High’s Abu Bangura Jr., Mike Price commit to continue football careers

McDONOUGH — Two Stockbridge High football players committed to different schools this week, as Abu Bangura Jr. committed to Georgia Southern University and Mike Price committed to Appalachian State University.

Mike Price commits to Appalachian State

Price posted 58 total tackles last year with two interceptions. He said his decision was mainly based on the relationship he had built with the Appalachian State coaching staff.

“I chose App State because of the relationship me and Coach Scot Sloan had,” Price said. “He always stayed and in touch and made sure I’m on the grind.”

Price said that the decision to commit made his parents proud and excited for the accomplishment.

“I did not expect to commit early,” Price said. “But I knew it was going to be before the first game. I am expecting to get better as a student and as an athlete and always expect to win.”

The expectations for Price’s senior season haven’t changed much as he hopes to bring a state championship to Stockbridge.

“Now that I’ve committed, and some others on my team are, we expect to bring a state championship back to Stockbridge,” he said. “Grind hard every day and get better together.”

Bangura Jr. commits to Georgia Southern

Abu Bangura Jr., a defensive end and tight end for the Tigers, announced his allegiance to Georgia Southern earlier this week.

“I chose Georgia Southern because I know that I will be getting a good education,” Bangura said. “I will also be a part of a winning program. I am all about winning, since I come from a program that wins already. So I can fit in and I have the fire to continue the tradition.”

Bangura said that choosing Georgia Southern came down to a desire to be a part of something big.

“I know we’ll win championships and I want to be apart of that,” Bangura said. “Not necessarily just one person but it’s a family thing — the coaches make you feel like you’re at home.

“It’s a weight off my shoulders as I close down my recruiting,” he continued. “I’m proud to be an Eagle.”

Stockbridge youth soccer team finishes second at Georgia State Games

KENNESAW — Soccer was reintroduced to this year’s Georgia State Games championship lineup after a 15-year hiatus. This past weekend at Kennesaw Mountain High School, soccer’s return for youth rec teams proved to be a nice stepping stone for years to come.

The four youth rec teams that competed at the weekend event were three U12 teams and one U10 team. Atlanta Fire earned a gold; Stockbridge United earned a silver; and MUSA Eagles was awarded a bronze medal. The All In FC The Union U10 team automatically earned a gold medal for being the only contender in that age group.

The teams who received a medal (gold, silver and bronze) qualify for the National State Games of America (SGA) being held this year in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the first week in August. “After its hiatus, we are excited to have brought back the game of soccer,” Georgia Games Executive Director Eric Pfeifer said. “A small, competitive environment made playing the game not as intimidating, but just as fun.”

The Georgia State Games was founded in 1989. Through sponsorships the organization has been able to maintain the tradition. The championships are an Olympic-style, multi-sports festival that holds events and tournaments.

Georgia Games strives to make this season their biggest yet with additions to their list of championships, and a continuance of the celebration of an Olympic atmosphere throughout the state of Georgia. All of Georgia’s residents are eligible to register and compete in this open invitation, state sports festival.

Michigan State adds CB/WR Shakur Brown to 2017 recruiting class

EAST LANSING – Michigan State picked up a late commitment Saturday from a place it has built a strong connection to in recent years.

Shakur Brown, a wide receiver and cornerback from Woodland High in Stockbridge, Georgia, announced he has committed to join the Spartans this fall – a rare June addition to an already-established recruiting class while coaches are working on 2018 prospects.

Brown is considered a three-star athlete by ESPN.com, 247Sports.com and Rivals.com. He had committed to West Virginia in January, but never signed with the Mountaineers and kept his recruitment open. Brown also had offers from Minnesota, Purdue, Tennessee, Ole Miss and Kentucky among others.

The 6-foot, 180-pound Brown was named to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Class 5A all-state team at defensive back. He also was the Region 4-AAAAA Special Teams Player of the Year and was a first-team all-county selection by the Henry Herald. He joins athlete Connor Heyward and defensive back Tre Person from Georgia in the Spartans’ 26-player 2017 class.

The Spartans also added kicker Cole Hahn as a 2017 scholarship signee in late April.

Brown will help MSU offset some of the recent losses, including safety Kenney Lyke and cornerback/wide receiver Kaleel Gaines leaving the program the previous two days.

MSU currently has six players for its 2018 recruiting class: four-star linebacker Michael Dowell from St. Edward’s in suburban Cleveland; four-star athlete Xavier Henderson and four-star tight end Trenton Gillison, both from Pickerington (Ohio) Central; three-star quarterback Theo Day from Dearborn Divine Child; three-star cornerback Christian Jackson from Marietta (Ga.) Lassiter; and three-star linebacker Edward Warinner from Olentangy (Ohio) Liberty High.

This week in Michigan recruiting: 5-star Georgia DE Chris Hinton visits Ann Arbor

Michigan hosted Chris Hinton, a 2019 five-star defensive end, for a visit this week.

ANN ARBOR – Michigan kicked off its summer satellite camp tour on Friday at Mercer University in Georgia.

That followed a visit to Ann Arbor this week from one of the state’s top prospects in Chris Hinton, a 2019 five-star defensive end from Greater Atlanta Christian School in Norcross, Ga.

At 6-foot-4 and 265 pounds, Hinton is the No. 2 strong-side defensive end and No. 13 player overall in the 2019 class, according to 247Sports Composite rankings, and this was his second trip to Ann Arbor. He has more than 20 offers, including Michigan, Alabama, Georgia and Stanford, and visited Ann Arbor with his younger brother Myles Hinton, a 6-6, 300-pound 2020 offensive tackle from Greater Atlanta Christian who already has an offer from Michigan.

Hinton told Scout.com that the trip allowed him to explore Michigan’s academic facilities, as well as talk to the coaching staff, and he’s very interested in the Wolverines.

"It’s second to none," he told Scout.com of Michigan’s academics. "The alumni base is amazing and supports you when you are done with football. They give you a lot of support so that you can be successful in class. Also, a Michigan degree is highly considered amongst a lot of people and businesses."

Hinton’s dad, Christopher Hinton Sr., went to Northwestern and played 13 seasons in the NFL (1983-95) as an offensive lineman.

Class addition: Michigan landed its third in-state recruit for its 2018 class when Ryan Hayes, a four-star offensive tackle/tight end from Traverse City West High School, committed on Saturday.

"It just felt right from my first visit and I just loved everything about it there," Hayes told 247Sports.

At 6-7 and 252 pounds, Hayes is the No. 4 recruit in Michigan, No. 17 offensive tackle and No. 214 player overall in the 2018 class. He picked Michigan over Notre Dame, Michigan State and others.

The Wolverines now have 10 players committed to their 2018 class, including three from Michigan in Hayes, four-star defensive end Aidan Hutchinson and four-star offensive tackle Jalen Mayfield. The other commits are four-star guard Emil Ekiyor, four-star cornerback Myles Sims, four-star linebacker/safety Otis Reese, four-star quarterback Joe Milton, three-star running back Christian Turner and three-star cornerbacks and twin brothers Gemon and German Green.

Visiting recruits: James Ohonba, a 2018 four-star offensive tackle from Woodland High School in Stockbridge, Ga., is on a visit to Michigan through Saturday, according to a report by Rivals.com.

At 6-5 and 320 pounds, Ohonba is the No. 23 offensive tackle and No. 306 player overall in the 2018 class. On May 18, he announced a top four of LSU, USC, Alabama and Michigan.

Noah Cain, a 2019 five-star running back from IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., told Scout.com that he will visit Michigan from June 22-25. The Wolverines will host their "1-Day Elite Camp" on June 23.

At 5-11 and 207 pounds, Cain is the No. 1 running back and No. 22 player overall in the 2019 class. He has at least 20 offers, including Michigan, LSU, Miami and Ohio State.

Making/missing the cut: Micah Parsons, a 2018 five-star defensive end from Harrisburg High School in Pennsylvania, announced a top nine of Ohio State, Florida, Nebraska, Miami, Florida State, Alabama, Michigan, Georgia and Penn State. At 6-3 and 235 pounds, Parsons is the No. 1 weak-side defensive end and No. 3 player overall in the 2018 class. He committed to Penn State in February 2016 but decommitted in April.

Kamryn Babb, a 2018 four-star wide receiver from Christian Brothers College High School in St. Louis, announced a top nine of LSU, Alabama, Ole Miss, Ohio State, USC, Missouri, Michigan, Nebraska and Notre Dame. At 6-1 and 189 pounds, Babb is the No. 9 receiver and No. 47 player overall in the 2018 class.

Talanoa Hufanga, a 2018 four-star athlete from Crescent Valley High School in Oregon, announced a top 10 of Utah, Oregon, Alabama, Notre Dame, Nebraska, Oregon State, Michigan, UCLA, USC and Washington. At 6-0 and 193 pounds, Hufanga is the No. 2 athlete and No. 92 player overall in the 2018 class.

Lawrence Keys III, a 2018 four-star receiver from McDonogh 35 High School in New Orleans, announced a top 13 of Houston, Texas Tech, TCU, Oklahoma, Alabama, LSU, Michigan, Arkansas, UTSA, Notre Dame, Colorado State, Auburn and Nebraska. At 5-10 and 160 pounds, Keys is the No. 39 receiver and No. 196 player overall in the 2018 class.

Michigan is out of the running for Asa Martin, a 2018 four-star running back from Austin High School in Alabama, who announced a final three of Florida, Auburn and Alabama. At 5-11 and 195 pounds, Martin is the No. 11 running back and No. 225 player overall in the 2018 class.

Brenton Cox, an Ohio State DE commit, now a five-star prospect in the 247Sports composite rankings

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State now has two five-star defensive line prospects committed in its 2018 recruiting class.

There isn’t a new commitment. Just a new rating.

Defensive end Brenton Cox of Stockbridge, Ga., who has been pledged to the Buckeyes since April 25, earned a fifth star in the 247Sports composite rankings on Tuesday.

Rated the No. 2 strongside defensive end in the 2017 class, Cox joins five-star defensive tackle and Ohio State commitment Taron Vincent of Bradenton (Fla.) IMG in the world of elite recruiting profile rankings.

Ohio State has 10 total verbal commitments in its 2018 class, three of which are now rated as five-star prospects. The third is quarterback Emory Jones of Franklin, Ga., who has been pledged since last July.

There are other fringe five-star prospects in the class, too, including four-star cornerback Jaiden Woodbey of Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco and four-star all-purpose back Jaelen Gill of Westerville (Ohio) South. Both of them have five-star ratings on other recruiting sites, which gives you an idea of just how deep Urban Meyer’s recruiting class is.

Ohio State is still after a handful of other five-star prospects it could ultimately sign, including defensive end Micah Parsons of Harrisburg, Pa., cornerback Patrick Surtain Jr. of Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) St. Thomas Aquinas, running back Zamir White of Laurinburg (N.C.) Scotland County and cornerback Anthony Cook of Houston (Texas) Lamar. All of those targets are rated as top-10 players nationally.

The 247Sports composite rankings average the ratings from all major recruiting services, which is how Cox got his new five-star distinction.

Ohio State’s 2018 recruiting class currently ranks No. 3 overall in the country in the 247Sports composite team rankings.

Three-star defensive end Jayson Oweh included Ohio State in his top 10.

The two adjacent properties, Carrington Ridge and The Retreat at Eagles Landing, total 490 units. Mesa Capital Partners purchased the communities from TIC Properties Management. Shea Campbell, Kevin Geiger and Ashish Cholia of CBRE’s Southeast Multifamily Group represented TIC Properties Management in the sale. Richard Jordan and Matt Forgione of CBRE’s Debt and Structured Finance team arranged acquisition financing on behalf of Mesa Capital Partners.

Eagle’s Landing cityhood advocates no show at forum, Stockbridge officials maintain opposition

STOCKBRIDGE — The Henry County NAACP hosted a forum Thursday to allow those for and against the creation of the city of Eagle’s Landing to explain their positions and answer audience questions.

However, with no one in support of the proposal in attendance, representatives for the city of Stockbridge and Ga. Sen. Emanuel Jones, D-Decatur, used the forum to their advantage, arguing that the cityhood proposal would be unprecedented and have devastating financial effects on the city of Stockbridge.

The Eagle’s Landing Educational Research Committee, the group proposing the new city, said during a pro-cityhood meeting Feb. 23 that there are several reasons for self-governance, including community identity, local control over land use and development and local accountability of elected officials.

Stockbridge officials are against the proposal, largely because the proposal would encompass half of the city of Stockbridge’s properties.

“The city of Stockbridge believes in any community having the right to self govern. We believe the citizens should have the right to have local control,” said Stockbridge Community Development Director Camilla Moore on Thursday. “What we don’t believe is that the law did not intend that any community can be created off the back of an existing city. That was not the design or intent of the law.”

The city of Stockbridge has no city property tax; however, city representatives argue that it is likely that the city of Eagle’s Landing residents will have a property tax, based on prior city incorporations. And because the proposed city of Eagle’s Landing map consists of about 50 percent of the Stockbridge properties, and would take away much of Stockbridge’s commercial and franchise fee revenues, it’s likely Stockbridge’s remaining residents would also be hit with a property tax to sustain the city.

The proposal has made its way to the Georgia General Assembly, though no action was taken during this year’s legislative session, which ended March 31. Sen. Rick Jeffares, R-McDonough, sponsored that bill, Senate Bill 263, as well as another intended to pave the way for the city’s charter. SB 262, if approved by majority of the General Assembly, would de-annex several properties from the city of Stockbridge.

Though Jones represents a majority of the properties in the cityhood proposal, he said he believes Jeffares filed the bills as a “general” bill as opposed to a “local” bill, so that the bill would have a higher likelihood of approval by a majority vote of all officials in the House and Senate. As a local bill, it would have required all local legislators representing the subject area to sign off on the bill, which Jones and Rep. Demetrius Douglas, D-Stockbridge, indicated they would not sign.

Jones encouraged the mayors of the each of the surrounding cities to approve a resolution to send to Henry County’s legislative delegation in opposition to the city formation, as such formation could set a precedent for other cities to be affected by future cities.

“We will host a series of public neighborhood meetings to discuss the viability of the proposed city as well as the impact to surrounding areas at a later date,” stated Consiglio. “At that time, we will consider invitations to make presentations to community groups. We thank the NAACP for their invitation and we will reach out to them at the appropriate time when we have more information from the feasibility study.”

When asked about the status of the feasibility study, Consiglio responded: “The mapping of the business tax was not by GIS census block area mapping, so it is taking a little longer to get that put together. We would rather them take their time than to rush it through. We are in no hurry because it is not needed until this fall by the Legislature anyway. It is nice to have it early, but we want it to be correct first and foremost.”

Michigan Football recruiting news and offer updates

Jim Harbaugh is pursuing recruits with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind

That is one of many factors that allows the Wolverines to continue to reel in top 10 recruiting classes year after year, with no signs of slowing down.

So far, Michigan has eight high school players committed to the 2018 class. The class is comprised of four-star quarterback Joe Milton, four-star cornerback Myles Sims, four-star linebacker/safety Otis Reese, four-star offensive lineman Emil Ekiyor, four-star defensive end Aidan Hutchinson, three-star running back Christian Turner and twin three-star cornerbacks Geman and Germon Green.

Even though they have a verbal commitment from Milton, the Wolverines are still pursing another option in 2018 at quarterback, three-star Chandler, Arizona native, Tyler Shough. He has already received more than 20 offers, and is rated the No. 20 ranked quarterback by 247 sports.

In addition to Shough, Michigan has just recently offered sophomore Harrison Bailey. You read that right. Not a sophomore in college, but in high school, with three full years left to go. Harrison has already racked up offers from Alabama, Florida State, Georgia, and others.

As a freshman, the 6-foot-4 215 pound young star threw for 2038 yards, 21 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions. He was 202-for-363 on passing downs and had two rushing touchdowns, according to MaxPreps.

But he isn’t the only one.

The Wolverines have also extended a scholarship offer to Hawaii native Sol-Jay Maiava, another sophomore quarterback in the class of 2020.

Even though Michigan has two stud quarterbacks next up in the line of succession with Brandon Peters (2016) and Dylan McCaffery (2017), the culture of relentless competition that Harbaugh has created must be fed fresh bodies for it to perpetuate. In the 2019 class, the Wolverines will most likely target five-star JT Daniels, from Santa Ana, CA.

In addition to all the quarterback action, Michigan has made the top four of James Ohnoba, a 2018 four-star offensive lineman from Stockbridge, Georgia. LSU, USC, and Alabama round out a stacked finalist list.

Via Twitter, Raleigh, N.C. native Alim McNeill announced his top-10 on Thursday. This group includes perennial powerhouse names such as Florida State, Clemson, and Michigan, among others. McNeill is the No. 19 defensive tackle and the 207th overall player in the 2018 class. Virginia Tech is currently the 247 sports crystal ball favorite 50 percent.

Closer to home, the Wolverines are in hot pursuit of Catholic Central offensive tackle, Jalen Mayfield. The No. 24 offensive tackle in the nation, Mayfield decommitted from the Minnesota Golden Gophers on March 24. There are 15 out of 15 crystal ball predictions in favor of Michigan on 247 sports, and he will announce his decision on Tuesday, May 23.

Among the recruiting success stories there are inevitable misses. Dallas Gant, 2018 four-star linebacker, and Owen Pappoe, 2019 five-star linebacker, will both be taking their talents elsewhere. Gant committed the Ohio State Buckeyes, while Owen Pappoe — who received his Michigan offer in eighth grade — announced a top ten which the Wolverines were left out of.

As Michigan continues to recruit hard and develop talent as good as anyone in the country, it will be exciting to see how far they can go. The era of Harbaugh will truly begin this year, as his first recruiting class will dominate the two-deep and have a chance to prove themselves this fall.

A Look Back At The Three Top Restaurants In Stockbridge GA

We have been in Stockbridge GA a few times in past articles looking at restaurants, and now is a good time to go back. These virtual visits are fun, aren’t they? I want to go back to the top three establishments in Stockbridge. Have they changed? Those rankings can change from time to time so you never know. Have you stayed in or passed through Stockbridge before? Perhaps you live there, in which case you will likely be familiar with these three top establishments in Stockbridge, Georgia.

The Italian restaurant Pasta Max is the number one establishment in the city. Have you had a hankering for some of the best Italian pastas in the area? Maybe you would like to try the stuffed eggplant. Aside from the food, customer reviews point to great wine and great service. I always say you can usually count on the ambiance of a good Italian restaurant, too.

The second ranked restaurant in Stockbridge is Papi’s Cuban & Caribbean Grill. If you hear that this place serves up empanada samplers, are you willing to try it out? The Cuban sandwiches must be authentic and delicious because one reviewer claims it was the best ever. To add to the empanada description, how about strawberry and cream cheese?

The third ranked restaurant in Stockbridge is Truett’s Grill. I remember reviewing this restaurant before. Now, one of its signature menu items I’m not such a fan of, but it sure looks like many people are. It is their sweet potato casserole. Its got a soul food menu though, which sounds quite tasty. I would have to go to the Cuban restaurant first because I would figure that they have the most unique menu. However, it would be hard not to order the Cuban sandwich the first time, don’t you agree?

Four-star offensive lineman James Ohonba from Stockbridge, GA (Woodland) announced his top schools on Twitter Thursday afternoon and included LSU in the list.

His top schools are LSU, Alabama, Southern Cal and Michigan.

The 6-5, 320-pound prospect from Woodland High School is rated the No. 23 overall offensive tackle in the country, according to 247Sports.

Stockbridge mourns high school senior; person of interest sought

Stockbridge High School is mourning the loss of Jesse Thomas, senior and sports star.

Sgt. Danny Gibbs of the Henry County Police Department said officers responded to a “trouble unknown” call May 13 at about 1:40 a.m. in Genelle Court in unincorporated McDonough.

“Upon arrival, they found an empty house with blood around the front doorway and the driveway,” he said. “Officers were able to make entry through an unlocked rear door.”

They confirmed the house was empty and found more blood inside, Gibbs said.

“They later received a call that Jesse Thomas had suffered a gunshot wound and died at (Piedmont Henry Hospital),” he said.

There had been a house party at the residence, so investigators began to locate and interview witnesses, Gibbs said.

“This is still happening,” he said. “We have a person of interest that we are trying to locate and interview.”

Gibbs said Dexter Deshawn Covington, 19, is that person of interest.

He is 5-10 and 135 pounds.

Covington was last seen driving a black 2014 Chevrolet Camaro with Georgia tag RCA2611 in the McDonough area.

Anyone with information on Covington’s whereabouts is asked to contact Detective Steven Rotella at 770-288-8269 or srotella@co.henry.ga.us, and refer to case No. 17-008743.

Witnesses are asked to use caution if the individual is seen.

Henry County Schools spokesman J.D. Hardin issued this statement:

“Our condolences go out to this student’s family during this very difficult time,” he said. “It is our hope that law enforcement is able to quickly find those responsible for this tragedy.”

Hardin said extra counselors will be at school today to meet with students and staff members.

Thomas was the Henry Neighbor athlete of the week in the Jan. 12 edition.

Head basketball coach Rodney Latham said at the time Thomas was a “very energetic and diligent player, a team leader and one who would do anything asked of him on the court.”

Gibbs said as updates on the homicide investigation come in, he will send them out.

Stockbridge adopts new state outdoor water waste regulations

STOCKBRIDGE — The city of Stockbridge now has an ordinance in place that prohibits wasting water, per Georgia Environmental Protection Division regulations adopted in 2010.

City Attorney Michael Williams presented the item to the Stockbridge City Council Monday before the council adopted the new regulations. The prohibitions now include:

• allowing water to escape from premises to any public right of way such as streets, sidewalks, pond or any other person’s property.

• operating an irrigation system or any other lawn or landscaping watering device during rain.

• operating an irrigation system or any other lawn or landscaping watering device that has any broken or missing sprinkler heads

• failing to repair a controllable leak including a broken sprinkler head, or leaky valve or outdoor faucet or a service leak on premises owned or leased by that person within 30 days.

• washing any vehicle with a hose and not having a water shut off nozzle or allowing the water to run continuously while washing any vehicle.

There are some exceptions, however, that include water applied to abate spills of flammable or otherwise hazardous materials, water used for power-washing hard surfaces to alleviate safety or sanitary hazards, and emptying of swimming pools for maintenance.

Mayor Pro Tem Anthony Ford inquired whether any fines would be associated with any violations and if the city’s code enforcement officer be responsible for enforcing the new ordinance.

Williams responded that violations could be enforced by code enforcement or police and suggested that the fine be the same as the general fine for code violations, up to $1,000, or as determined by the court. He added that the amount of the fine could be based on the number of violations and the extremity of the violation.

Councilman John Blount abstained from voting on the new ordinance after having expressed concern about homes that have angled driveways that would cause water to down-flow onto a street.

Cities and counties across Georgia are expected to adopt similar ordinances if they haven’t already.

Female suspect sought in Stockbridge burglary

Henry County police released surveillance video from May 6 showing a white female suspect using a tool to steal items from the store on Eagles Landing Parkway.

Stockbridge’s Marquez Ezzard narrows list of schools to eight

Stockbridge High School junior Marquez Ezzard narrowed his list of colleges to eight over the weekend.

After teasing his list release on April 23, the 6-foot-1, 213 pound athlete from Stockbridge, Ga. posted a statement on Twitter on Friday along with his list.

Ezzard’s top eight schools are Southern California, Florida State, Ole Miss, Georgia, Auburn, Florida, Ohio State and South Carolina.

“While I am still open to other schools, my family and I have decided upon my Top 8 college choices which I have listed in no particular order,” Ezzard’s statement read in part.

The 4-star Ezzard is ranked No. 251 on 2018 ESPN 300 and No. 26 on 247 Sports’ list of top 2018 recruits in Georgia.

Hospital staff saves truck driver’s life, cares for his dog

STOCKBRIDGE, Ga. – Sometimes pets are the forgotten victims when it comes to a medical emergency.

While their owners are being tended to, there can be a desperate search to find someone to take care of them.

When it came to truck driver Jose Carbajal, he didn’t have to search far to find his guardian angel.

Carbajal, from Texas, was driving through Georgia with his dog Mr. Midnight, when he decided to finally stop at the nearest hospital after enduring 17 hours of stomach pain.

After a Google search, he saw Piedmont Henry Hospital was the closest hospital in Stockbridge.

”It was a rough ride. When I learned I had to have surgery, I was more worried about my puppy inside the truck. Before I got into the elevators, a very special nurse to me – Miss Wendy Johnson – came running up beside the gurney and told me, ‘don’t you worry about a thing. We have Mr. Midnight and we have someone coming to get him. Everything is going to be fine.’”

A CT scan showed that Carbajal’s appendix was on the verge of rupturing. He was rushed into surgery and spent about a week in the hospital.

But Carbajal didn’t have to worry about what would happen with Mr. Midnight – a technician, Deanna Mahaley, took his precious pup home with her family.

“Not everyone is going to open the door knowing there is a pit bull inside,” Carbajal said. “We all know pit bulls get such a bad rap. [Deanna’s husband] opened the door and climbed into the truck. Animals know people with a good heart so it didn’t take much for Mr. Midnight to get into his lap and start licking him.”

April Dean, nurse at Piedmont Henry, heard Carbajal’s story and was determined to help. Her husband brought Carbajal pajamas and other clothes so that he could be comfortable during his stay. A few days later, Carbajal was being discharged when Mahaley’s family came with Mr. Midnight to visit.

But the hospitality didn’t stop at Mr. Midnight.

“My plans were to climb back in my truck and rest in the sleeper until I felt better,” Carbajal said. “They took me home and gave me a bed to sleep in and that means so much to me. It is good to know this world still has people like that. I stayed the night and the next morning, Miss Wendy Johnson opened the doors to her house so I could recuperate before I got back on the road.”

Carbajal, who was eager to get home to his wife and five children, hit the road with Mr. Midnight three days after he left Piedmont Henry and started their 1,000-mile journey back home to Texas.

“I’m used to having doors closed in my face because I’m tattooed from head to toe,” Carbajal said. “I’ve lived a rough life and I’ve never had so many people be so nice to me and welcome me with open arms the way they did. It just touched my heart so much that people were going out of their way to help.”

Ohio State football | Defensive end prospect commits to Buckeyes

Defensive end Brenton Cox of Stockbridge, Georgia, became the eighth commitment to Ohio State’s 2018 recruiting class on Tuesday night.

Cox, 6 feet 4 and 245 pounds, announced his decision on Twitter, picking the Buckeyes over Georgia.

“I would like to say that I’m 100 percent committed to The Ohio State University,” Cox wrote after thanking those close to him in the process.

He is considered to be the No. 2 strongside defensive-end prospect in the country, according to the 247Sports composite of the major recruiting rankings, and the No.43 overall prospect.

Henry County firefighters’ vehicles broken into at 3 Stockbridge stations

STOCKBRIDGE — Henry County and Clayton County authorities are investigating a string of thefts from firefighters’ vehicles parked at four area fire stations overnight Monday.

Early Tuesday morning, firefighters at Station No. 9 on Rock Quarry Road, Station No. 3 on Ga. Highway 42 and Station No. 11 on Flat Rock Road discovered their vehicles were broken into and personal items were stolen.

According to the Henry County Police Department, 19 total vehicles were broken into in Henry. The Police Department is handling the investigation into the Henry County crimes, though similar incidents were also reported at a Clayton County fire station Tuesday. Thieves also hit two stations each in Rockdale and Walton counties over the weekend.

In Stockbridge, thieves reportedly stole personal items and damaged both personal and county property, Henry County fire spokesman Capt. Michael Black said.

Black said that while he can’t comment on ongoing investigations out of multiple jurisdictions, “the likelihood is quite possible” that the recent incidents are related.

“Our focus is on the safety and security of our employees,” Black said. “Our minds are filled with disbelief knowing that someone would target firefighters that are obviously committed to serving our community.” He added that whoever is responsible for the crimes could not possibly represent the Henry County community as a whole.

As to why criminals would target fire stations, Henry County police spokesman Capt. Mike Ireland said he can only speculate.

“We don’t know if it’s targeted at the fire stations or if it’s an opportunity for these individuals to hit that location, we have no idea,” Ireland said.

Ireland said it’s possible the thieves are waiting for a station’s crew to be called out to a scene before breaking into the firefighters’ vehicles. Though in Rockdale, the fire chief said both stations’ crews were likely asleep at the time of the thefts, according to the Rockdale Citizen.

Four vehicles were damaged at Clayton County Fire Station No. 9 on Old Dixie Highway in Hapeville early Tuesday morning. Deputy Fire Chief Jacque Feilke said stations 14 and 8 on the northeastern side of Clayton County were also hit within recent weeks, and that Chief Landry Merkison is coordinating with Clayton County and Henry County police to investigate the crimes.

Unfortunately, Feilke said, “this is nothing new.”

There have been several reports of vehicle break-ins at metro Atlanta fire stations over the past few months.

The break-ins apparently began last November when stations in Atlanta and DeKalb County were hit, and have been continuing ever since. In January, four fire stations in Gwinnett County were targets, and in March, 27 vehicles at stations in Coweta and Fayette counties were hit, as well as stations in East Point and Forsyth County.

In March, the Morrow Police Department arrested a man suspected of stealing a firefighter’s personal vehicle from a Morrow fire station. The vehicle was tracked to a Forest Park home, and the homeowner was arrested.

Morrow police have not released the name of the homeowner, citing his possible connection to the recent crimes at surrounding fire stations.

Feilke said it’s disheartening to think that a firefighter could come off a 24-hour shift and discover their personal property damaged or stolen.

“These guys and girls are here for 24 hours, trying to respond to emergencies and take care of folks, and when they leave to go home in the morning they’ve got their vehicle broken into,” she said.

Clayton County Fire and Emergency Services is encouraging employees to not to leave personal items in their vehicles or to store them out of sight, and the fire chief will be working to determine any additional measures needed to deter thefts.

“We’re doing everything we can on our end,” Feilke said. “We’re just asking the public for their help.”

Feilke encourages anyone who may be passing by a Clayton County fire station at night to keep an eye out for suspicious activity, and to call 911 to report any possible crimes.

It is located on Highway 20 SE, and you might want to know that this is a family restaurant. Don’t you just love going to family owned and operated restaurants that you find? They can be hidden gems, or they can be establishments that all the locals frequent. When it comes to Tavas Pizza by the way, they have a delicious Greek Salad according to the reviews.

That was another great pick, but let me give you some more. There is Truett’s Grill, Italian Oven Restaurant, Arizona’s at Stone Crest and Sabiang Thai. For a smaller city in Georgia, that’s two good Thai spots already. You are going to have some great eats when you visit the city of Stockbridge, Georgia.

Thursday on TV: ABC shows us the real people behind 'When We Rise'

Tonight, ABC/Ch. 4 airs Part 3 of “When We Rise” (8 p.m.), the fine miniseries about the decades-long LGBT fight for rights.

It’s the early ’90s, and Cleve, Ken and Richard have all contracted HIV. In order to get the country, the government and the president to give those dying of AIDS any attention, Cleve creates the Names Project AIDS Memorial quilt.

The miniseries tells the story of the movement through the stories of a handful of real people — and they appear in “When We Rise: The People Behind the Story” (7 p.m., ABC/Ch. 4), and hourlong documentary that features Cleve Jones, Roma Guy, Ken Jones, Diane Jones and Cecilia Chung.

Tuesday on TV: Maya Angelou's 'American Experience' is inspiring

At a time when Americans need all the inspiration they can get, “American Masters” gives “Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise” (7 p.m., PBS/Ch. 7).

If you’re not familiar with her life, this documentary — which premiered at Sundance in 2016 — will open your eyes. Even if you are, you’ll feel renewed after you watch it.

“I think my grandma’s life is a call to action,” said Colin Johnson, co-founder of Caged Bird Legacy, LLC, which is dedicated to continuing the work of Maya Angelou. “I think that the documentary itself tells a story about someone that hasn’t given up on themselves or humanity.”

Johnson, who’s interviewed in the program, said that he’s been approached after screenings and “some people have felt healed and some people have felt renewed and rejuvenated. And I think that when you have such a feeling you should probably do something with that and maybe try to find a way to give it to somebody else.”

The program includes Angelou herself, in interviews done for “American Masters” before her death in 2014.

“Those really formed the core of our film, those interviews with her, because it’s really her story.

“There’s no narrator,” said filmmaker Bob Hercules. “It’s her really narrating.”

Angelou died during the production of this project, so the filmmakers scoured the archives for previous interview with a variety of outlets.

“We had to dig really deep and find other interviews that would be connective threads — to help us tell this story and make sense out of it,” Hercules said. “Usually, in these kinds of films, you know, you’re able to go back to your subject and say, ‘We have a couple of follow up questions.’ We didn’t have that opportunity, so we really had a great team of archivists working on this.

“So it was really challenging, but I’d say a great challenge.”

And the end result is a really fine, two-hour documentary.
